TiltWatch® RFID is a single-use tilt indicator with a built-in passive RFID tag. Like the standard TiltWatch XTR, it turns red if a package is tipped beyond its threshold. Unlike the XTR, that result can also be read electronically by any standard UHF RFID reader, so tilted shipments can be flagged automatically as they pass through a receiving gate or a handheld scan, without anyone checking each indicator by eye.
Stuck For®, a brand of Good Life Innovations Ltd — an authorised SpotSee® distributor — supplies TiltWatch RFID from UK stock and can help you decide whether RFID is right for your operation.
How TiltWatch RFID Works
- Tilt detection: the indicator activates when the package is tipped past its threshold. SpotSee specifies the tilt threshold as 85° ±5° at 20°C.
- Visual evidence: the window turns red and stays red. The change is permanent and tamper-evident.
- Electronic evidence: the passive RFID tag (ISO 18000-6 / EPC Gen 2) reports whether the indicator has been triggered. No batteries are needed.
- Serialised: each indicator carries a unique identity, so a tilt event can be tied to a specific shipment in your warehouse or transport management system.
- Not triggered by vibration: normal transport vibration does not set it off; it responds to genuine tipping.
When to Use TiltWatch RFID
Choose TiltWatch RFID over the standard TiltWatch XTR when:
- You already use UHF RFID for goods-in, inventory or asset tracking.
- You receive high volumes, where visually checking every indicator slows the dock down.
- You want tilt events recorded automatically in your WMS or ERP, rather than noted by hand.
- You need an audit trail showing which shipments were tipped, for carrier claims or quality reporting.
Typical goods include appliances, HVAC units, compressors and oil-filled equipment, electronics and computer hardware, scientific instruments, glass, furniture, and industrial machinery: anything that must stay upright.
Which Tilt Indicator Should You Choose?
| Indicator | How the result is read | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| TiltWatch XTR | By eye | Simple, low-cost tilt monitoring |
| TiltWatch XTR QR | By eye, plus a smartphone scan to the SpotSee Cloud | A digital record without RFID equipment |
| TiltWatch RFID | By eye, plus any UHF RFID reader | High-volume receiving with existing RFID systems |
| TiltWatch Plus | By eye: direction and degree of tilt, plus inversion | When you need to know how far, and which way, it tipped |
Fitting and Reading
- Fitting: remove the adhesive backing and apply to a flat, clean surface on the outer packaging, or secure it with screws, nails or staples. Fit it upright, as the indicator monitors tilt relative to its mounted position.
- Companion labels: use a TiltWatch companion label alongside, so handlers know the shipment is monitored and receivers know what to do if it has activated.
- Reading electronically: SpotSee's reader guidance is to read address 0x21 (33) in the EPC memory bank. A value of 8104 means the indicator has been triggered (tilted); 8114 means it has not. Your RFID integrator will be able to set this up on your existing readers.
